Notts County manager Martin Allen has signed midfielder Gavin Mahon on a pay-as-you pay deal until January.
Mahon, 34, was released by QPR in the summer and had been training with one of his former clubs, Watford.
He told BBC Radio Nottingham: "I spoke to Martin Allen and he asked about my situation and said he needed experience to help the youngsters and here I am."
The Magpies also hope to bring in an unnamed striker in time for Saturday's game at Preston North End.
Mahon added: "I'm the sort of player that likes to put my physicality on the game, get amongst people, talk and organise.
"I'm a winner. I want to be in teams that are pushing to be successful and the gaffer's no different.
"I do think I could still do a job in the Championship and I've come here to help this club get in the Championship. And if I can do that, I wlll be very happy."
Mahon, who began his career at Wolves and has also played for Hereford United, Brentford, Watford and QPR, spent three months on loan with Crystal Palace last season.
