Kilmarnock 0-0 Hearts

Kilmarnock and Hearts failed to find a breakthrough in their Scottish Premier League encounter at Rugby Park.

James Dayton had a free-kick saved for the hosts and Hearts' Stephen Elliott struck the bar with a header before half-time.

Gary Harkins fired over the Hearts bar in the early stages of the second half.

Goalkeeper Cammy Bell made a double save to deny Hearts' Danny Grainger and Ryan Stevenson as both sides were forced to settle for a point.

And though the clean sheet restores some confidence in the Hearts' ranks following Thursday's 5-0 defeat to Tottenham, the Tynecastle side will be disappointed not to have claimed a morale-boosting win.

Marian Kello claimed Dayton's early free-kick and minutes later Paul Heffernan failed to find a Kilmarnock team-mate as a promising advance came to nothing.

Hearts posed a threat at corner kicks and Bell had to turn one over before Grainger headed another wide.

Bell was called into action again to tip over a Jamie Hamill free-kick and the visitors almost broke the deadlock nine minutes before the interval.

Andy Driver's cross found Elliott and the striker's header beat Bell but not the bar and Killie were able to clear.

The home side, who lost Ryan O'Leary to injury at half-time, were more enterprising in the second half and Heffernan's header from an offside position drew a save from Kello.

Harkins was next to threaten for Killie but lashed over from the six-yard line after connecting with Rory McKeown's cross.

Harkins blasted over from outside the box minutes later after retrieving a free-kick that Hearts had cleared.

The visitors went back on the attack and Grainger's free-kick was palmed away by Bell, who also blocked the rebound effort from Stevenson before Manual Pascali cleared.

Liam Kelly's free-kick cleared the crossbar before Kilmarnock claimed unsuccessfully for a penalty.

Dayton went down in the Hearts box after being closed down by Grainger but referee Calum Murray waved play on.

Hearts did have the ball in the net late on but Elliott was converting a cross from an offside position.
