Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew says he is disappointed by the injury to left back Emilio Izaguirre, even though it provides Mulgrew with a chance to break into the first team.

Mulgrew replaced Izaguirre in the SPL match at Aberdeen on Sunday after the Honduran international broke his ankle.

With Izaguirre likely to be out for several months Mulgrew is the obvious deputy.

But Mulgrew admits that the absence of the Player of The Year is a "big loss".

As a left-sided defensive player Mulgrew is the obvious choice to deputise for Izaguirre.

"I don't know if it's my preferred position but I've played there a lot and I'm comfortable there," he said.

"It's very disappointing for everybody about Emilio's injury.

"He's going to be a big loss for the team and everybody's gutted for him.

"I've got to believe in myself. If I'm chosen to play there then I'll do my best and I'm confident I can do a job there."

And Mulgrew admits he is undecided over his strongest position.

"I can't put my finger on it," he added.

"Wherever I play I just try to do my best and if I play well then I enjoy it. I don't have a preferred position."
