Ashley Westwood scored the only goal of the match to help Northampton to a hard-fought victory against Aldershot.
Westwood, who was making his first league start for the club since 2006, headed home from Michael Jacobs' cross.
Shots piled on the pressure as Michael Rankine headed wide, Aaron Brown missed two chances and Luke Guttridge hit the angle of post and bar when well placed.
Northampton goalkeeper Sam Walker then pushed Brown's acrobatic effort on to the post to frustrate Aldershot again.
VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Aldershot boss Dean Holdsworth told BBC Surrey:
"I think we were a little bit nervous in the first half. Straight from the kick-off we were sloppy.
"Second half our passing was 10 times better. I thought we were excellent and deserved something from the game.
"We hit the post twice and on another day we could have had two penalties. We didn't get the rub of the green. I'm disappointed today."
