Torquay United's Lee Mansell relishing midfield role

Torquay United skipper Lee Mansell says he is relishing the chance to begin the season in the middle of midfield.

The 28-year-old, who has retained the captain's armband under new boss Martin Ling, has spent much of his time at Plainmoor playing at right-back.

But he has always preferred playing in central midfield, a position Ling agrees with.

"The boss has placed a lot of faith in me this year and I hope to repay that," he told BBC Radio Devon.

"I'm glad to be back playing in the middle of the park again."

Following Daniel Leadbitter's arrival from Newcastle Unitedand with Joe Oastler impressing at right-back during pre-season there should be enough cover for Mansell to ensure he gets a run of games in his favoured position.

However, the former Oxford United man says he is willing to go back into defence if needed: "If I have to go back there and have to do a job for a little while then I'll do that.

"It's the same with every member of the team, if they're asked to do something they've got to do it to the best of their ability," he added.
