Kettering Town sign Real Madrid defender Jaime Navarro
Kettering Town have signed the former Real Madrid defender Jaime Navarro on a two-year contract.
The 20-year-old played for the Spanish giants' C team last season and spent time on trial at Premier League club Bolton Wanderers this summer.
Poppies chairman Imraan Ladak told BBC Radio Northampton: "Cristiano Ronaldo told him that first team football in England would suit his game.
"Real wanted to extend his contract but it's an incredible deal for us."
Although Navarro has not played for the La Liga side's first team, Ladak is overjoyed at the new addition.
"He trained with us for a week before going to Bolton but they don't feel he's ready for first team action. He's one for the future and he's opted to join us," he said.
"It's not about money. Real Madrid don't pay their C team extraordinary amounts, so he's not used to the millionnaire lifestyle.
"He's a confident lad, he's technically gifted and [we are] the perfect fit for him. It's about getting the right opportunity, hopefully in a successful side and hopefully being a stand-out player."
However Ladak admits that Navarro may not stay with the Poppies for long.
"If you're signing a 20-year-old from Real Madrid you can't be anything but a stepping stone and it's a great privilege for us to attract a player like that.
"It'll be a short term investment for him in what he wants to achieve over the next five, 10 or 15 years.
"If he ends up being the player that people think he will be, he can't be with us for that long."
