Colchester United manager John Ward has confirmed they have missed out on a potential loan signing this week.

The U's have been on the look-out for new strikers throughout the summer.

Ward told BBC Essex: "I'm trying to get a couple in that would help the team and supplement it.

"One club's just changed its mind and they're entitled to do whatever they want. I'm still having a go, if we can't do it, we'll go with what we've got."

Colchester head to Preston North End for their League One opener this weekend.

They currently have just Steven Gillespie and Kayode Odejayi as recognised strikers, but also have the option of playing wingers Ian Henderson or Ashley Vincent in attack.

Ward added: "Kay's not going to play every single game, neither are other players, they need some help."

"I've tried to do two or three this week, got close and the clubs have changed their minds, that's life."
