Rohan Ricketts wants to sign for Southend United but only if he receives a 'fair offer'.
The former Spurs and Wolves winger, 28, has been on trial with the League Two side but will look elsewhere if they cannot agree terms.
Ricketts told BBC Essex: "The negotiations are still ongoing between the chief executive and my agent.
"It's not about me wanting more than what they can give. It's about a fair offer," he added.
"I'm really hoping we can agree a deal in the next 48 hours or I probably am going to have to speak to other clubs."
Southend boss Paul Sturrock has suggested that Ricketts, who has been out of English football since leaving Barnsley in 2008, needs to work on his fitness following the club's pre-season tour of Scotland.
"He's right," said Ricketts. "But pre-season is for players improving their fitness.
"I don't know if that's a bargain chip for him. Every player throughout pre-season is trying to improve their fitness."
Southend looked at more trialists in a 1-1 pre-season friendly draw at Braintree on Wednesday night.
Slovakian defender Vladimir Galbavy, ex-Ipswich winger Reggie Lambe, midfielder Jean-Paul Kalala and striker Albert Jarrett all featured.
Former Plymouth full-back Ryan Leonard scored for the Blues, the third goal of his pre-season trial.
