Leicester City striker Steve Howard insists he will thrive on the fierce competition for places next season.
City have been busy in the transfer market this summer, signing seven players including forward David Nugent.
Boss Sven-Goran Eriksson is also keen on Bristol City's Nicky Maynard but 35-year-old Howard, who has a year left on his contract, welcomes the challenge.
"When you have no-one pushing behind you then you can go stale," Howard told BBC Radio Leicester.
"But when you have someone pushing for your position you have to keep on your toes because if you have a bad game you won't be playing.
"There are a lot of new faces coming in and the gaffer has brought in quality."
Howard, who scored all four goals in the 4-1 pre-season victory over Swedish side Vaslunds on Monday, added: "We'll wait and see. I'll get my head down, like I have throughout my career, and see where I end up."
