Morocco thump Algeria to go top in Group D
Morocco moved to the top of an incredibly tight Group D of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations after their emphatic 4-0 win over Algeria on Saturday.
First-half goals by Mehdi Benatia and Marouane Chamakh put the Atlas Lions on their way to the win in Marrakesh.
Youssouf Hadji and Oussama Assaidi scored after the break to seal the win.
Italy-based defender Benatia opened the scoring for the home side on 26 minutes - his first goal for the national team.
Arsenal striker Chamakh doubled Morocco's lead six minutes later, taking his Morocco goal tally to 16.
Hadji struck on the hour mark before Assaidi's close range effort in the 69th minute sealed the victory for Morocco.
The result takes the Atlas Lions to the top of the group with seven points while Algeria, Central African Republic and Tanzania are tied on four points each.
Central African Republic will host Tanzania in the group's other game in Bangui on Sunday.
