Sunderland midfielder Jack Colback is determined to repay the faith shown by manager Steve Bruce in handing him a first-team opportunity.

Bruce has said he intends to retain Colbackexternal-link, 21, who has been a regular in the last five Premier League games.

"It's great to hear that the manager has me in his plans for next season," Colback told BBC Newcastle.

"I just need to kick on now and do well in pre-season and hopefully impress the manager again."

Colback added: "There's competition for places so I've got to keep my head down and get in there."

Colback was brought back by the Wearsiders from a second loan spell at Ipswich in January, where the Killingworth-born player had made 13 appearances.

"It was massive for me going out on loan, I came back with great experience, playing in front of bigger crowds, in competitive football week, in week out," Colback continued.

"If I hadn't done that - if I had come into the first-team earlier at Sunderland - I might have struggled more than I have, but I've come in and done ok, and it's helped massively."

Former England under-19 international Colback came through the club's academy system to make his debut in a 2-1 defeat against Wolves in May 2010.
