Cody McDonald's late equaliser helped maintain Gillingham's chase for promotion against Morecambe.
The visitors took a shock first half lead through Phil Jevon's penalty after Matt Lawrence was adjudged to have handled in the area.
The home side dominated but were kept at bay by Barry Roche who saved from Kevin Maher and Adebayo Akinfenwa.
Gills' top scorer McDonald found the net late on though, heading in John Nutter's cross at the back post.
Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler told BBC Radio Kent
"It was a penalty. At the time I thought it wasn't. Matt didn't mean to handball it but he was trying to get around the player without touching him, and it's hit him on the hand.
"He's not going to deliberately do that because he knows it will be a penalty, you could see our frustration. You can see why he has given it.
"We're disappointed but effort-wise, they showed that today so I can't fault my players."
