Derby County manager Nigel Clough is desperate for centre-half Shaun Barker to have surgery on his persistent knee injury as soon as possible.
Barker has been delaying an operation while the Rams are unsure of their Championship safety but has not been able to train for two months.
Clough told BBC Radio Derby: "We want him in as soon as possible.
"With two home games in four days - depending on other results - he could be in hospital on Wednesday."
The Rams, who play Coventry on Saturday and Leeds on Tuesday, are nine points clear of the relegation zone with seven games remaining.
