Dean Winstanley battled back from behind to beat Mervyn King in a 3-2 first-round win on his PDC World Darts Championship debut.

The former BDO championship finalist, 31, clinched his last-32 place with a dramatic 6-4 win in the deciding set.

He said: "I'm totally gone. It was a battle. Why can't I have straight forward matches? I'm blown out."

Sixth seed Wes Newton won 3-0 against Johnny Haines, while Steve Beaton progressed against Kyle Anderson.

Winstanley, beaten finalist in the 2011 BDO World Darts Championship, won the opening set at the Alexandra Palace before King took control to move 2-1 ahead.

Yorkshireman Winstanley levelled to take the match to a decider, where 14th-seed King twice missed double-top chances to clinch victory before Winstanley eventually located the same part of the board.

Newton had to endure some nervous moments in the first set against Haines before edging ahead 3-2 and then taking control by winning six of the next seven legs.

Australia's Anderson had darts to win the opening two sets against Beaton before the 1996 BDO world champion eventually set up a second-round meeting with last year's semi-finalist James Wade.
