Dawson is only in cause of the ya boo sucks attitude of the selectors. SA must love it. Root is already looking shaky off the field.
Really don't understand Jennings, i think Malan looks like a very good player.. We need to find someone who adds some solidity to the top of the order and i think it could be him.. I agree with Kingkong the selectors need to be shaken up and some of our great recent players consulted..
This may be controversial but the reason why the side is unbalanced is mainly because of Ali. I like Moeen, but how do you play him? A spinner who can bat, or a batsman who can spin? I don't think you can pick him on his batting alone (short ball), so he has to be the main spinner to warrant his spot and his place in the side should be judged purely on bowling merit.
At the Oval today KP demonstrated that he should be a "shoe-in" for South Africa.May I be the last to mention him in any kind of HYS.
@204 - Haha. Well there we are, then. Snap! I never talked to him as you did, but I did see him bat (at the Oval) and I did get his autograph. Another co-incidence was that I shared a birthday date with him - 16 June.
@203 I was lucky enough to have know Tom Graveney. I assisted him in some coaching clinics in the early 80's. I probably learned more about batting from him chatting in the evenings in a hotel than I ever did in a net! A truly charming gent, and as you say one of the most elegant of batsmen, but also someone who valued his wicket and did not give it away cheaply!
@196 kingkong - It wasn't all grind and grim defence in "the good old days." For example, you should have seen Tom Graveney in full flow. Sweet elegance personified'
I hope Jack Leach gets into the side before the Ashes. I accept Rashid is a wicket taker but for me Leach is the only spinner of potential international class we have at the moment. He's had trouble with his action but what I've read suggests it was a minor thing that he's worked very hard to correct, he is miles better than Dawson who has added very little with the bat so far.
198 Dismissing tailenders is getting more and more important in the modern game where everyone can make runs. His basic attitude has always been good, refusal to play last Championship game for Yorks last year notwithstanding. He should be managed if need be. Turns the ball both ways. He's not a Warne but his skills are significant and still improving.
@199 They don't actually see that much county cricket, more than Bayliss granted.
Now how about a selection panel of: Brearley, Gatting, Robin Smith, Graeme Swan & Michael Vaughan? Between them they have experience, grit, determination, knowledge, and they probably all see far more cricket that the present bunch do. Including the so called Coach. Gatting Smith & Vaughan are grafters, Swan has a great bowlers brain and Brearley would see their heads are in the right place
#195 actually records show Moeen usually gets the better top 5 players out and Rashid wipes up the tail enders, been the case in the past. As I posted earlier, Rashid has seriously upset powers that be with his attitude and lack of team ethic and lets be blunt, if his mate from Yorkshire does not want him in Test Squad, who will???
Leg spinners are usually expensive. but they do get wickets, so Rashid being left out is strange. Broad, Anderson, Stokes and a fit Woakes are still a decent seam attack. Rashid & Ali give depth in spin with Ali batting at 5:How about:CookStonemanJenningsRootAliStokesBairstowRashidWoakesBroadAnderson
No matter what the team I do believe they should all be shown how some old warriors used to bat, defending their wicket and grinding the opposition down: Close, Barrington, John Edrich , Gooch, Cowdrey, Hutton, Graveney, Robin Smith, Boycott, Atherton, May. Men that showed playing for England was an honour and not about the money and fame! Guts & determination are what's needed now. Not T20 shots!
Rashid should be playing. He gets good players out. His omission is ridiculous. What's going on, Joe?
OMG. My computer tells me it's Friday. Really must be getting past it. Jump from 192 to 195, readers.
Thursday. Strangely cricket free. Hope to God that Hameed's out practising from dawn to dusk.
dawson still in,stoneman overlooked, yea English selectors staying true to form
@, 181, kingkong,I actually agree with Your Comment & I like Your Team although I Probably would have Stoneman Open and take a bit of pressure of Jennings by Moving him to No3!.
