After being set a target of 232, the visitors slumped to 37-3, but Taylor (49) and Wessels (70) took them to 157-3 at stumps - needing 75 more to win.
Earlier, Worcestershire's Joe Clarke made 61 before Ross Whiteley (78) and useful contributions from the lower order took the hosts to 292 all out.
Jake Ball starred for Notts with 4-67.

When Whiteley was bowled by Samit Patel to leave Worcestershire 223-7, the lead was only 162, but Joe Leach hit 40 and Saeed Ajmal made 19 to take the advantage past 200.
Charlie Morris gave Worcestershire the ideal start when he trapped Brendan Taylor lbw, and had Alex Hales caught by Whiteley early on, before Leach took his 50th Championship wicket of the summer when he removed Steven Mullaney.
However, Wessels and Taylor dominated the final hour, striking 14 boundaries between them, and left Worcestershire facing their eighth defeat of the season in Division One.
