Hampshire suffered a batting collapse at the start and end of their innings as Essex beat them by six wickets.
After home skipper James Vince elected to bat, his side slumped to 68-5.
Liam Dawson (85) and Will Smith (63) put on 124 for the sixth wicket, but Hampshire lost their last five wickets for only 17 runs to be bowled out for 209, with Reece Topley claiming 4-26.
Mark Pettini (57) and Nick Browne (69) then shared an opening stand of 122 as Essex won with eight overs to spare.
Tom Westley weighed in with 53 off 57 balls as Essex moved up to second in a tight Group B with three wins out of six games.
Hampshire are third, two points behind.
