Alex Wakely's century rescued Northants from trouble as they struggled to cope with Gloucestershire bowler Liam Norwell on day one at Cheltenham.
Wakely and Ben Duckett (53) enjoyed a second-wicket partnership of 90.
But a fine display from seamer Norwell (6-41) saw the visitors slip from 90-1 to 122-6 in 12 overs as they were bowled out for 246.
Gloucestershire's top order fared little better, Rory Kleinveldt taking two wickets as the hosts ended 82-4.
Wakely's century, which included 16 boundaries, was the third of his first-class career, his first since 2010 and a rare highlight in a poor batting display by Northants.
But they made a good start with the ball, with Olly Stone dismissing Chris Dent in the second over of Gloucestershire's reply.
Gloucestershire bowler Liam Norwell:
"I wasn't happy with how I bowled to begin with, but I managed to come up trumps just before and after lunch.
"I can't remember taking five-for in such a short spell before. I managed to get the ball in better areas, they played some poor shots and you take your luck when it comes to you.
"I think we bowled too short to start with, but we got our areas and lines much better as the day went on, especially after lunch."
Northants skipper Alex Wakely:
"It's been a long time coming. It's been quite a frustrating few years for me. I feel I've been playing well without getting the end results.
"Scoring a hundred had become quite a big issue for me. Mentally, it had become quite a big hurdle.
"It was a big relief for me to get one today and to do so in quite testing circumstances was particularly pleasing."
