LV= County Championship Division One, Trent Bridge (day one)
Somerset 312: Allenby 64, Overton 55, Philander 4-56
Nottinghamshire 57-2: Mullaney 19, Groenewald 1-16
Nottinghamshire 3pts, Somerset 3pts
An aggressive fifty from Craig Overton sparked a Somerset recovery against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.
Marcus Trescothick was bowled by Vernon Philander (4-56) for a duck in the first over before Jim Allenby (64) and Peter Trego (41) steadied the innings.
Despite another wobble, Overton's 55 off 31 balls, including 11 boundaries, saw Somerset to 312 all out.
Lewis Gregory and Tim Groenewald then picked up two late wickets to leave Nottinghamshire 57-2 at the close.
That winning momentum
Nottinghamshire's seven-wicket victory over Somerset at Taunton last June ended a run of seven consecutive Championship draws between the two.
Asked to bat on a green wicket, Somerset struggled early on against South African seamer Philander and then lost three wickets in 11 balls before lunch as they slumped to 101-5.
Allenby and Trego's 85-run partnership gave the visitors some momentum before all-rounder Trego was bowled by the returning Steven Mullaney.
Once Allenby fell, caught in the slips, it was down to Overton to further frustrate Nottinghamshire.
The 21-year-old brought up his half-century from just 28 balls before he was bowled by Harry Gurney.
Groenewald chopped Luke Wood onto his stumps shortly afterwards as Somerset were bowled out in only 69.4 overs.
Nottinghamshire started cautiously before Mullaney (19) and Greg Smith (eight), on his Nottinghamshire debut, were trapped lbw by Gregory and Groenewald respectively to leave the game intriguingly poised.
