David Willey smashed his maiden first-class century to give Northants control against Gloucestershire on day three.
The 25-year-old all-rounder hit 104 not out off 83 balls before the hosts declared on 416-8 - a lead of 453.
Willey shared a eighth-wicket stand of 115 in just 15.2 overs with South African Rory Kleinveldt (48), while Rob Keogh scored 81 and Josh Cobb made 58.
Gloucestershire then reached 35-0 at stumps with Chris Dent unbeaten on 22 and Will Tavare 13 not out.
Willey, who came to the crease with his side wobbling on 211-6 after Cobb was dismissed, struck seven fours and six sixes to surpass his previous first-class best of 81.
Gloucestershire will now need to chase down the sixth-highest score in County Championship history if they are to pull off a remarkable win on the final day.
