Dawid Malan's unbeaten 90 helped steer Middlesex towards a strong total on a rain-shortened opening day at Uxbridge.

They opted to bat after winning the toss, but suffered the early loss of captain Chris Rogers for just seven.

Fellow opener Nick Gubbins then hit a career-best 59 in a 109-run stand with Malan, who closed in on his second ton in as many Championship matches.

Malan was the main contributor in a 73-run partnership with Eoin Morgan (12) before rain stopped play at 211-4.

Peter Trego (2-39) was the most successful bowler, taking the wickets of Morgan and Neil Dexter.

Middlesex and Somerset, fifth and fourth in the table respectively, will both be hoping for victory to close the gap on leaders Nottinghamshire, however rain stopped play just before tea, and prevented any further play.

Somerset director of cricket Dave Nosworthy:

"Credit to the bowlers. They really ran in hard today and were pretty disciplined, but unfortunately we were unable to convert a few chances.

"It was frustrating but we're not really upset about it or in a panic. There's another day to come and hopefully we can get a few more wickets in the morning."

BBC London 94.9's Kevin Hand:

"Middlesex edged the first day but could have made Somerset pay more heavily for some sloppy catching on an unusally lively Uxbridge track.

"Four good chances were put down but only Dawid Malan stands to really punish the visitors after both Nick Gubbins and Eoin Morgan both fell not long after offering their initial chances.

"Other than the hardest of the four chances, a caught and bowled for Peter Trego, Malan's innings has been fluent on a pitch that has offered seam and swing to the bowlers."
