Tony Palladino took four wickets on his Derbyshire return as Somerset struggled to 180-6 on a rain-interrupted day.

The seamer, out since May 1 with a side strain, tempted England's Nick Compton to edge to slip for 15 before lunch.

Tim Groenewald picked up the key wicket of Marcus Trescothick for 50 before Palladino dismissed Dean Elgar (26), James Hildreth (36) and Craig Kieswetter (7) in quick succession.

Play resumed at 18:20 BST after a long delay but the showers soon returned.

After starting the day on 16-0, Trescothick took the attack to the Derbyshire bowlers in the first hour with a flurry of boundaries.

But Derbyshire's discipline paid off as Wes Durston took a fine catch at slip to remove Compton with the score on 56.

Play was held up briefly when strong winds blew down the sightscreens at one end, but Trescothick reached his fourth Championship half century of the summer shortly after before he was caught at slip in the next over to leave Somerset on 101-2.

Elgar became 29-year-old Palladino's second victim when he drove straight to Wayne Madsen at cover, before the returning Craig Kieswetter edged a rising delivery behind and James Hildreth was trapped in front to give the former Essex man figures of 4-75.

Moments after Alex Barrow fell to a smart catch by Derbyshire wicket-keeper Richard Johnson, the heavens opened once again and the players left the field at 15:50 BST with Somerset on 166-6.

When the players finally returned two and a half hours later, Peter Trego smashed Palladino for three boundaries in four balls, but just three overs were possible before another shower forced the umpires to abandon play for the day.
