Match scorecard

Derbyshire wicketkeeper Richard Johnson led the rescue party as his side fought back from their morning struggles to occupy the crease for most of the first day against Somerset.

Having lunched on 84-3, they collapsed further after the resumption to 141-6.

But Johnson hit 56, in an eighth-wicket stand of 82 with Tony Palladino (49), building on Wayne Madsen's earlier 50.

Having bowled out Derbyshire for 266, Somerset replied with 16-0 in seven testing overs before the close.

But that included a near-miss for England Test opener Nick Compton, who nearly succumbed to an attempted hook off Mark Footitt in the fifth over, being put down to what would have been a great catch at long leg.

There was further drama off Footitt's final ball of the day when Johnson appeared to throw down the stumps with Somerset skipper Marcus Trescothick out of his crease, having already started making his way to the pavilion.

Having won the toss, former England opener Trescothick opted to bat on a lively pitch, his decision being justified by a trio of wickets piece for Jamie Overton (3-35) and Alfonso Thomas (3-54).
