Shivnarine Chanderpaul hit 78 not out from 88 balls as Derbyshire closed day one on 245-2 against Nottinghamshire.

Billy Godleman (28) and Chesney Hughes (59) made a good start but were out in quick succession, bringing Wayne Madsen and Chanderpaul together at 100-2.

They shared an unbroken century stand, Madsen nudging his way to 67 while his partner raced beyond a half century.

Just six balls were bowled after tea as rain and bad light meant only 65 overs were completed on day one.

After the opening pair had provided a strong platform with a partnership of 89, Hughes was caught in the deep by Andre Adams as he looked to pull Harry Gurney to the midwicket boundary.

Adams then grabbed a wicket himself, tempting Godleman forwards and taking his outside edge to give captain Chris Read a comfortable catch.

Chanderpaul then joined captain Madsen at the crease and the pair were imperious as they built a partnership that had reached 145 by the close of play, the West Indies international batting in unfamiliarly positive fashion, hitting six boundaries as he passed 50 from only 57 deliveries.

Following a delayed start to the evening session, only one over was bowled before play was abandoned for the day to leave Chanderpaul well-set for a second Championship century of the season after hitting 129 against Surrey in May.

BBC Radio Nottingham's Dave Bracegirdle:

"The day certainly did not go as well as Nottinghamshire had hoped, having put their local rivals in to bat.

"Apart from in 2010 when he was famously dismissed for a duck to seal the County Championship title, Shivnarine Chanderpaul always gets runs against Nottinghamshire.

"The silver lining to a pretty murky day was the return of Andre Adams, after 2 months out injured."
