Three late wickets brought Derbyshire back into the game in their promotion battle with Kent at Canterbury.
The visitors, who began day two on 32-1, were dismissed for 200 with Mark Davies taking 5-27, while Wayne Madsen top scored with 64.
Title-chasing Derbyshire, who were last in the top flight in 2000, were grateful to Tom Poynton (45).
Wes Durston took 2-7 in five overs as Kent slipped from 58-0 to 59-3 at close - a lead of 120 runs.
