Chris Nash and Monty Panesar helped Sussex take control on day two of their match against Somerset at Hove.
Somerset, resuming on 30-1, collapsed from 68-1 to 134 all out as Panesar claimed figures of 3-15 off 13 overs.
Marcus Trescothick top scored with 31, while Lewis Hatchett and Steve Magoffin also both took three wickets apiece.
Sussex, who are set to miss out on the championship title, reached 186-2 at stumps with Nash on 106 not out and Murray Goodwin unbeaten on 51.
The hosts began this match hopeful of closing the gap on league leaders Warwickshire, although the Bears have dominated the opening two days of their game against Worcestershire and are on course to win Division One.
But Sussex still enjoyed the second day and took nine Somerset wickets inside 35 overs.
Australian Magoffin added the wickets of Trescothick and Chris Jones to go with the dismissal of Arul Suppiah late on Tuesday.
Panesar took the wickets of James Hildreth, Steve Snell and Abdur Rehman, while Hatchett, making only his second Championship appearance of the season, dismissed Alfonso Thomas, Sajid Mahmood and Alex Barrow.
Goodwin, who is leaving Sussex at the end of the season, will resume on Thursday 49 runs away from making a century in his last match at Hove.
