South Africa 365-4 v Derbyshire 75-1
Match scorecard

AB de Villiers retired just short of a century as South Africa's batsmen impressed again on day one of their tour match against Derbyshire.

De Villiers smashed 97 off 96 balls, including two sixes and 16 fours, as South Africa declared on 365-4.

He put on 157 for the third wicket with JP Duminy (69), while Faf du Plessis (68 not out) and Albie Morkel (49 not out) shared an unbroken century stand.

Derbyshire were 75-1 at the close, with Australian Usman Khawaja 36 not out.

South Africa captain Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis were both passed fit to play after picking up injuries in the drawn second Test at Headingley and were included in a 15-man team, while Alviro Petersen is expected to recover from a hamstring strain in time for the final Test at Lord's starting on Thursday.

But it was the tourists' other batsmen who enjoyed themselves, with only Jacques Rudolph missing out after being trapped leg before playing across a full length delivery from Derbyshire debutant Ally Evans.

Hashim Amla was bowled before lunch by Ross Whitely, but after that South Africa's batsmen dominated against the county's second-string attack.

De Villiers eased to his half-century off 46 balls and three figures looked a formality before he opted to retire three short of his century.

David Wainwright took a sharp return catch to remove Duminy but Du Plessis and Morkel plundered 127 in 17 overs either side of tea.

Vernon Philander enticed Matt Lineker to edge behind to wicketkeeper Thami Tsolekile as South Africa searched for wickets before the close, but Wayne Madsen and Khawaja ensured Derbyshire got through otherwise unscathed.
