LV County Championship Division Two, Grace Road
Close, day two: Leicestershire 319 v Middlesex 401-8
Middlesex 8pts, Leics 5pts
Middlesex are closing in on promotion after claiming maximum batting points on the second day of their Division Two clash with Leicestershire.
The visitors reached 401-8 at stumps and now need just to avoid defeat to secure their place in the top flight.
David Malan (97), John Simpson (55) and Gareth Berg (70 not out) helped Middlesex maintain their title charge.
Their cause has also been helped by Northants only claiming three batting points against Gloucestershire.
CLOSE OF PLAY SUMMARY
BBC London 94.9's Kevin Hand:
"Middlesex got off to a flier as Andrew Strauss and Sam Robson blasted their way through the first 45 minutes but, after a 30-minute rain delay, both were removed before lunch.
"Leicestershire bowled with patience on a track that wasn't offering a great deal and, when off-spinner Jigar Naik removed Chris Rogers and Jamie Dalrymple in quick succession, Middlesex would have been fearful of handing a first-innings advantage to their hosts and dropping valuable batting points.
"Dawid Malan and John Simpson led the recovery that saw the visitors reach 350 and a fourth batting point, which means a draw in the match will be enough to see them promoted.
"A win is still required to ensure Surrey do not pip them for top spot in Division Two."
