CLOSE OF PLAY SUMMARY
BBC Radio Kent's Matt Cole:
"It looked like a good toss for Geraint Jones to win in damp early conditions - and certainly batsmen were tested early on - but Wes Durston looked in fabulous nick for his hundred. He punished any wayward bowling and looked imperious - particularly driving on the off-side.
"David Balcombe nearly dragged Kent back into it with a spell mid-afternoon where he suddenly conjured life and vicious bounce from the strip. Once again the on-loan bowler has shown what a fine acquisition he'd be for any county wrestling his contract from Hampshire.
"While Derbyshire have a platform for victory, Kent have it all to do on day two just to stay in the game. Without the experience of Key, van Jaarsveld and Tredwell in the side, they'll need to show character to escape defeat."
