|Durham 23pts, Sussex 4pts|
Durham completed victory over Sussex by 208 runs on the final afternoon at Hove to go top of the County Championship.
Sussex began the day on 117-4, needing an unlikely 402 more runs to win.
But they made Durham work for victory as England keeper Matt Prior (77), Michael Yardy (34), Wayne Parnell (44) and Ben Brown (27 not out) resisted.
Ian Blackwell claimed three of the six wickets to fall, including Prior, to finish with 5-102, while England seamer Graham Onions took 3-49.
Durham do not play in next week's round of matches and will hope their closest rivals Lancashire and Warwickshire slip up in their games in hand before entertaining Worcestershire in their final match.
Meanwhile, defeat for Sussex has dragged them into the thick of the battle to avoid relegation.
They lost nightwatchman James Anyon in the sixth over of the morning, caught at short leg by Mark Stoneman off Mitch Claydon, but Prior counter-attacked with 77 off 88 ballls, with 15 fours.
His resistance was ended when Blackwell won an lbw appeal and followed that up by having Yardy caught at silly mid-off by Will Smith.
Brown and Parnell saw Sussex through to lunch, but Onions removed Parnell and Amjad Khan in quick succession before Blackwell bowled Panesar to win the game, but not before the England left-arm spinner has swept and clubbed him for three leg-side sixes.
