Graham Onions' six-wicket haul put Durham in charge on day two of their Division One clash with Nottinghamshire at Chester-le-Street.

Resuming on 272-7 the hosts reached 351 with Phil Mustard, who started the day on 46, ending with an unbeaten 88.

Onions claimed figures of 6-95 as Nottinghamshire were bowled out for 261, 90 runs short of the hosts, with Chris Read ending on 133 not out.

In reply Durham ended the day's play on 6-0 after three overs.

Mustard and Callum Thorp had put on 30 off the first four overs of the second day as Durham added 79 to their total.

Read and Adam Voges then put on a fifth-wicket stand of 178 for Nottinghamshire before Onions claimed the last four wickets for just 21 runs.

BBC Newcastle's Martin Emmerson:

"A good day for Durham, who at one point looked like they were going to bowl out Notts for a record low score.

"With two young debutants opening the batting there was always a chance something like this might happen and Sam Kelsall's dismissal to Onions in the sixth over opened the floodgates.

"With him gone for 11 Rikki Wessels went first ball, meaning Onions would be on a hat-trick first ball of his next over. But while he waited for his chance, Callum Thorp removed former Durham man Karl Turner and Steven Mullaney first ball to give him a hat-trick chance as well.

"Neither got them though. Chris Read's resilience saw Notts go from losing four wickets in six balls for no runs, to not losing another wicket in the afternoon session as he put on 178 with Adam Voges.

"The resistance was eventually broken by Onions and Durham's 90 run-lead is valuable. The six-point gap over Lancashire is so important as well."
