Somerset pacemen Charl Willoughby and Alfonso Thomas spearheaded their side to a nine-wicket victory over County Championship leaders Durham.

Resuming at 209-1, Durham looked a good bet to save the game at Taunton.

But, after Murali Kartik removed overnight centurion Will Smith for 114, Willoughby took 4-80 and Thomas 3-73 as Durham were bowled out for 378.

Arul Suppiah then hit 66 not out as Somerset reached 119-1 inside 22 overs to keep their slim title hopes alive.

Left-armer Willoughby capitalised on the overcast conditions with his ability to swing the ball to inflict only Durham's second Championship defeat of the season.

That left Somerset a minimum of 43 overs to reach their target. And, despite Marcus Trescothick playing on to a delivery from Graham Onions after a breezy 25, Suppiah played confidently to see his team to a win that puts them fourth in the table and keeps their own hopes of a late challenge for the title alive.

With Lancashire and Warwickshire having won, the result throws the race for the Championship title wide open, Durham's lead being reduced to just five points over Lancashire and 13 over Warwickshire, who both have a game in hand.
