Andrew Hall hit 66 to help Division Two leaders Northants salvage a draw with Derbyshire at Wantage Road.
Derbyshire, 89 ahead on first innings, declared on 268-4, setting the home side 358 to win.
At 111-5, it looked Derbyshire might force victory after two wickets apiece for Mark Turner and Jonathan Clare.
But skipper Hall's half century, assisted by Niall O'Brien (36no), averted the danger before hands were shaken with Northants on 229-5.
Derbyshire added 97 to their overnight total in just 14 overs before declaring, with Greg Smith and Ross Whiteley unbeaten on 57 and 52 respectively. to give Northants a difficult victory target.
After his 5-32 in Northants' first innings, Turner's two wickets gave him a career-best match haul of 7-80.
But Hall and O'Brien added an unbroken 103 for the sixth wicket to guide their side towards the draw to stretch their side 18 points clear going into next week's clash with Glamorgan at Swansea.
Derbyshire's 10-point haul lifts them to fourth - 18 points adrift of second-placed Middlesex.
