Mills took a wicket on his first-class debut for Essex against Sri Lanka

Teenager Tymal Mills starred with the ball on his Championship debut as Essex beat Leicestershire by 254 runs.

The 18-year-old, whose only other first-class game was against Sri Lanka last month, took 3-48 as the hosts were all out for 138.

After losing Will Jefferson to the first ball of the innings, no Leicestershire batsman scored more than Matthew Boyce's 26.

Earlier, Owais Shah made a season-best 112 not out as Essex declared on 344-5.

That set Leicestershire an unlikely victory target of 393 and after Jefferson's golden duck, the East Midlands county never recovered and were 79-5 at lunch.

Jigar Naik and Australian Andrew McDonald both made 25 to hold up Essex's quest for a third Championship victory of the season.

But they did not have to wait long - with Harry Gurney absent hurt, last man Nadeem Malik fell to Ryan ten Doeschate and Essex wrapped their second four-day win in succession.

POST-MATCH REACTION

Essex coach Paul Grayson tells BBC Essex:

"It was an outstanding performance with three centuries in the match and we backed that up with some terrific bowling.

"There's a nice balance to our attack at the moment and a really good feeling in the squad.

"We've got six Championship games left, four at home and two away, and if we can build some momentum we can get up."
