|Surrey 154-7 (20 overs) beat Essex 111 (17.3 overs) by 43 runs|
Tom Maynard top scored with 45 as Surrey eased to a Friends Life t20 victory over Essex Eagles.
Surrey were in trouble at 11-2 when Maynard came to the crease but he struck an assured 45 from 37 balls.
The hosts were also indebted to 19-year-old Zafar Ansari, who struck 30 off just 18 balls on his debut to take the score to 154-7.
Essex's reply never got going and Pakistan fast bowler Yasir Arafat took 3-15 to skittle the Eagles out for 111.
Essex opened with England internationals Ravi Bopara and Owais Shah but Shah was dismissed for a duck off the second ball of the innings when he sliced an Arafat delivery down to Dirk Nannes at third man.
Nannes then cleaned up Matt Walker with a fast, straight delivery and Essex were in trouble when Bopara followed soon after, trapped lbw by Arafat for nine.
James Foster and Adam Wheater steadied the ship with a partnership of 36 but once Foster was out to Zander de Bruyn Essex fell apart.
They lost their last five wickets for just 16 runs as England seamer Jade Dernbach wrapped up the win with a yorker which beat Wheater.
The win takes Surrey above Essex and into fourth place in their group.
