Middlesex edge Sussex in thriller

Friends Life t20, Hove
Middlesex 164-5 beat Sussex 163-8 by five wickets
Match scorecard

Middlesex battled to a thrilling victory against Sussex with just one ball to spare.

In-form Luke Wright smashed 71 from 45 balls as the home team reached 163-8 from their 20 overs.

But Neil Dexter's 4-21 from three overs tempered Sussex's run charge - an intervention that proved crucial.

Chris Rogers (44) set Middlesex on their way before Scott Newman struck 39 and the winning runs as they reached 164-5 with the penultimate ball.

Earlier Rogers put on 70 for the second wicket with Steven Crook (29), a partnership that placed the visitors in the driving seat.

They remained on course until a tight spell from Navad-ul-Hasan slowed their scoring and took the game into the final over.

But Newman remained composed to guide Middlesex to their first FL t20 victory at the fourth attempt.

POST-MATCH VERDICT

Middlesex skipper Neil Dexter told BBC London 94.9:

"We bowled well. That was about a par score on that wicket and Scott Newman played a terrific innings to finish it off.

"We'd played three and lost three and had nothing to lose.

"There's still a lot of games to play. We can get back in this tournament."
