Badrinath helped India to a total that appeared unlikely after an early collapse

An under-strength India easily defended 159 to beat West Indies by 16 runs in their Twenty20 match in Trinidad.

With Virender Sehwag, Mahendra Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh among the absentees, India were grateful for Subramaniam Badrinath's 43, having been 56-4.

And Yusuf Pathan's 15 from six balls helped set a total the hosts never truly threatened.

Dwayne Bravo hit 41 but Windies fell behind the rate with Chris Barnwell's rapid 34 ultimately an irrelevance.

However, had Barnwell come to the crease earlier the result might have been different. Arriving at 93-5 with 22 balls remaining he bludgeoned his runs from 16 balls, hitting three sixes in the process.

By then the pattern had been set, none of West Indies' top four scoring at better than a run a ball to increase the pressure on the middle order.

The teams now play five one-day internationals from Monday 6 June prior to a three-Test series.
