Lancs opener Paul Horton hit his third first-class fifty of the summer so far

Paul Horton top scored with a season's best 94 as leaders Lancashire rallied to total 313 in the day against Durham at Chester-le-Street.

After a bad start at 9-2, Horton hit 15 fours to pull the visitors round.

After then sliding from 150-3 to 227-7, Championship leaders Lancashire looked like getting only one batting point.

Skipper Glen Chapple (46) and Luke Procter (45) then put on 87 for the eighth wicket, before the last three went down for just one run.

Former England off spinner Ian Blackwell was Durham's best performer, taking 3-57.

Graham Onions failed to enhance his chances of replacing the injured James Anderson in the second Test, taking 1-55.

Watched by selector James Whitaker at Chester-le-Street, Onions came under attack from visiting captain Chapple when he took the new ball with the score on 241-7.

Just nine overs later it was 310-7. But, when Mitch Claydon replaced Onions just two more runs were added before the last three wickets went down for one run.

Chapple top-edged a cut to third man, then Procter was caught behind before Kyle Hogg shouldered arms to Blackwell and was bowled, giving the left-arm spinner his third wicket.

On a pitch tinged with green, Mustard put Lancashire in and was soon rewarded.

Stephen Moore fell to the 12th ball of the day when he was surprised by the bounce from Callum Thorp and edged to third slip. Then Karl Brown shaped to drive Onions and edged to second slip.

And Lancashire would have been in dire trouble had Paul Horton's edge offered more than a very slight chance to Gordon Muchall at first slip.
