Lancashire's push for victory in the Roses match was held up by the weather as rain wiped out around half of the third day's play at Aigburth.

The hosts lasted only 11 balls on the third morning as Steve Patterson (4-51) struck twice to dismiss them for 329.

Yorkshire reached 85-2 before rain held up play for three and a half hours.

They then faced 15 more overs, Joe Sayers (51 not out) and Andrew Gale (47 not out) helping them close day three on 131-2, still 57 behind.

The pair have so far added an unbroken 83 for the third wicket in 27 overs.

Sayers, who scored a determined half-century in the first innings, had to be in a similar mood early on to combat a spell of accurate short-pitched bowling from Jimmy Anderson.

He also tackled six successive maidens from home skipper Glen Chapple with the new ball, before eventually cutting the Lancashire skipper for four.

Opening partner Adam Lyth failed to survive, chipping a ball that seemed to stop.

And Joe Root edged his way to 15 off 45 balls before being struck on the pads by Sri Lankan Farveez Maharoof.

Sayers and captain Gale then advanced the score, but with only 49.5 overs of play possible as the rain washed out most of the afternoon and evening sessions, Yorkshire now look in a much better poisition to save the game on the final day.
