Liam Dawson hit an unbeaten century to give Hampshire hope of saving their game with Somerset at The Rose Bowl.

With Hampshire facing a first-innings deficit of 228, Dawson (103 no) and Jimmy Adams (73) shared an opening stand of 181.

But, with Neil McKenzie falling to the final ball of the day, the hosts closed on 212-3, still trailing by 16.

Earlier, Somerset were bowled out for 513, Marcus Trescothick finally falling for 227, while Jos Buttler made 61.

Trescothick had completed the fourth double century of his career when he drove Danny Briggs to Dominic Cork in the covers.

His dismissal sparked a collapse that saw Somerset lose their last five wickets for 20 runs as left-arm spinner Briggs (5-79) ran through the tail.

Dawson and Adams set about wiping out the Hampshire deficit, but Arul Suppiah's double breakthrough put Somerset back in command.

First Adams nudged to short leg, then Johann Myburgh was leg before for a duck.

McKenzie arrived to see Dawson to his century but the South African became Alex Barrow's maiden first-class wicket when he edged to Trescothick at slip.
