Glamorgan's Mark Wallace hit 82 to provide Essex with a daunting final day chase at Chelmsford.

After the visitors resumed on 50-1, 74 ahead, David Masters (5-73) and Tim Phillips (4-97) reduced them to 217-6.

But the tail wagged, Wallace helping to add 118 for the final four wickets as Glamorgan made it to 335 before the keeper proved the final man to fall.

Needing 360 to win, Essex lost Billy Godleman but made it to the close on 34-1, Alastair Cook unbeaten on 23.

Godleman was pinned lbw by James Harris from the fifth ball of the Essex chase. But Cook, on whose shoulders most of the home hopes lie, refused to let the early setback disturb him.

The Welsh county will have to attempt to shift the England opener without the services of paceman Huw Waters, who will not bowl again in the match because of back trouble.

CLOSE OF PLAY SUMMARY

BBC Essex's Dick Davies:

"David Masters continues to impress, recording yet another five-wicket haul.

"Tim Phillips showed that maybe he should be given more opportunities, taking 4-97, but Lonwabo Tsotsobe did not bowl well, and, to top it all, dropped an absolute sitter at mid on. Things can only improve for him.

"With Alastair Cook not out and plenty of quality batsmen waiting in the pavilion, Essex could bring off a spectacular and confidence-boosting final day victory.
