Dean Cosker (2-67) was Glamorgan's most successful bowler as the hosts toiled.
DAY ONE REACTION
BBC Radio Wales' Edward Bevan: "Much of the attention was centred around Tom Maynard making his first appearance here since leaving Glamorgan last winter.
"He was nearly out first ball but then settled and would've been pleased, as would his watching family, to reach 60 not-out at the close.
"Maynard has put on 122 with Zander de Bruyn who anchored the Surrey innings with a patient knock of 109 not-out although he was dropped on 40.
"Glamorgan's bowlers did well to restrict the visitors to just under three runs an over, but they'll be confident of a total in excess of 400."
