Glasgow 2014: Jersey's Simon Phelan rues poor high jump show

Jersey high jumper Simon Phelan says he is unhappy with his performance at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Phelan jumped 2.06m to come bottom of his qualifying pool and miss out on a place in the final.

"This is probably the worst I've jumped for a year, so I'm not very happy with myself. I didn't do very well," the 28-year-old told BBC Radio Jersey.

"I jumped higher in the warm-up than I did in the competition, so I messed things up."

Phelan was competing at his second Commonwealth Games, having jumped 2.05m in Melbourne eight years ago.

"Result-wise it's fairly similar, I didn't jump very well then either," he added.

"But just to get here has been amazing, to be surrounded by these athletes. It would have been nice to jump a bit higher, but experience-wise it's good."
