Brazil's Isaquias Queiroz dos Santos, 22, celebrates after claiming bronze in the men's 200m canoe sprint, won by Ukraine's Yuriy Cheban.
At the age of three, Santos suffered significant burns to his body after a pot of boiling water fell on him.
Two years later, he was kidnapped and offered for adoption before eventually being returned to his mother, and at the age 10 he fell out of a tree after trying to get a better look at a snake and ended up losing a kidney.
You can catch up with the rest of the canoeing here.
