Coventry v Sheffield: Blaze ready for reunion with ex-coach Thompson
Coventry Blaze came from nowhere to win ice hockey's Elite League play-offs title last season. And already, just three matches into the new season, the fixture list has thrown up a rematch with Sheffield Steelers, the team they beat in the final.
But this Saturday's Challenge Cup clash with the Steelers at Coventry's Skydome (19:00 BST) means a reunion with their legendary ex-coach Paul Thompson, who led them to 15 trophies, including four Elite League titles, in his 18 years in charge.
Blaze coach Chuck Weber told BBC Midlands Today: "Thommo and I got to know each other last season. It's one of those situations when you like each other for 22 hours out of the day but, for the two hours you play each other, you're enemies."
BBC Midlands Today sports editor Nick Clitheroe's pre-match package features new signing Michael Quesnele, a Canadian who chose to stay in University to get his degree before turning pro this year and moving to Britain for the first time.
