Rui Costa wins world road race title ahead of Joaquim Rodriguez

Portuguese rider Rui Costa wins a dramatic world road race title by outsprinting Spain's Joaquim Rodriguez in Florence.

Torrential rain for all but the last few kilometres of a gruelling seven-and-a-half hour race saw the entire British squad retire from the race long before the end.

Costa chased down and passed Rodriguez in the final kilometre having jumped away from third-placed Spaniard Alejandro Valverde, with home favourite Vincenzo Nibali narrowly missing out on a medal.
