The cracking of the cross bar sounded the death knell for the Home International. In 1977 Scotland won at Wembley, three games ahead of England in the last of the annual Home International matches, for the first time in ten years. Scottish supporters flooded onto the pitch and the ensuing chaos meant the end of the competition.
