Industry collaboration


The BBC recognises the importance of working with other broadcasters, production companies and industry partners to collectively tackle issues and improve the sustainability of the TV industry. We are making good progress as an organisation but the opportunities for success, and the positive impact we can have is far greater if we work with others.

We’re founding partners of three collaborative initiatives. The albert project tackles the here and now, focusing on reducing the impacts of TV production.  Carbon Literacy delivers environmental education and training for film and TV employees. From Lens to Screen looks at the bigger broadcast system, exploring major trends that affect our industry with the aim of building a shared vision of what a sustainable future for broadcast media could be.

Carbon Literacy: inspiring and educating staff

2015 saw the launch of a pioneering collaboration initiated in BBC North between the BBC, ITV, Peel Media, dock10 and Creative Skillset with support from The Carbon Literacy Project.  Together the partners have created and begun roll-out of a two-part sustainability training programme specifically aimed at people working within broadcast media. Available for all BBC staff, Carbon Literacy Training aims to give employees the skills and motivation they need to thrive, professionally and personally, in the low-carbon economy. Developing the course with partners reduced set up costs and enhanced the creativity of the project through productive collaboration and sharing of best practice between the organizations involved.


BAFTA albert consortium: sustainable production

Since 2011 we have been working with the BAFTA-led albert consortium which enables TV and film organisations to use albert, a free online tool originally developed at the BBC, to calculate the carbon footprints of their productions. The consortium is supported by the biggest broadcasters and production houses in the UK.

Collectively this consortium promotes best practice in sustainable production through its website, newsletters and events, and also has rolled out albert sustainable production certification to consortium members. 

From Lens to Screen: a longer term view for a sustainable industry

Building on a conference held in 2013, From Lens to Screen is a cross-sector collaboration project building a shared understanding of what a sustainable future could look like for the broadcast and media industry. Working with partners Forum for the Future, BT, and the IABM, the project explored the major trends impacting TV, radio and online media both now and in future, and has identified areas for collaboration.

Since the project completed we have run a Lens to Screen group as roundtables for industry participants to discuss sustainability. Participants include BBC, ITV, Sky, BT, IABM, Huawei, Sony, TechUK, Arqiva, Ericsson and Virgin Media
