BBC Trecvid EastEnders Academic Challenge Dataset
This dataset is provided by BBC R&D for non-commercial, academic use through Dublin City University, to participants of TRECVid 2020 Instance Search research challenge.
If you would like to request access to the BBC EastEnders dataset you will first need to agree to the BBC’s terms of use in the BBC R&D ‘Permission to Use for Participants’ form below. A member of your organisation will need to sign it. Dublin City University will then receive a copy of the signed form approved by the BBC, and then participants will be supplied with passwords and be able to download the BBC dataset from Dublin City University’s platform.
Project from - present
We will give Dublin City University a copy of the signed BBC R&D permission form to confirm that we are happy for them to give you access to our dataset, and they may send a copy of this signed form to the TRECVid project lead (National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for their own purposes.
Before signing the BBC R&D permission form you and your researchers should also read any privacy information that Dublin City University gives Challenge participants about how they handle your personal data, and information on the website of NIST.
We would also like you to note the following restrictions in particular:
- The dataset is available to researchers from approved organisations strictly for non-commercial research for the Challenge. Use is not permitted for any other purposes.
- The dataset is for your use only. You mustn’t distribute the data to anyone else. If other members of your team wish to have access to the dataset, they'll need to ger their own password from Dublin City University. Before receiving any passwords a member of your organisation must sign the BBC R&D permission form agreeing to the BBC’s terms of use on behalf of your organisation, including you and your team, and email this form to rob.cooper [at] bbc.co.uk.
- The dataset must be held securely and used in line with the BBC’s terms of use.
- When it is time to publish, if you’d like to use sample images of the data in your academic paper please ensure that this is consistent with the BBC’s terms.
- The BBC’s permission is for 12 months only. If you would like to carry on using the dataset after 12 months you’ll need to contact the BBC to request a renewal.
Download the BBC R&D ‘Permission to Use for Participants’ form
Please download the form, read it, fill it in and indicate agreement to our terms. The form should be completed to indicate agreement to the terms on behalf of your organisation (including all the researchers of your organisation who are participating in the Challenge). The completed form should be emailed to rob.cooper (at) bbc.co.uk from an official email address of your organisation. If approved, you’ll receive a countersigned form.
We will then send a copy of the signed form to Dublin City University who will be responsible for supplying you with passwords to access the BBC dataset from their platform.
Please note: the Challenge is administered by NIST, who are based the US, and Dublin City University may send them a copy of the signed form (including any details supplied to us in it) for their own purposes.
