Radio 4 listeners will be exposed to sounds never heard by mankind before when they tune into The Sound of Life – a programme which takes the listener on an acoustic journey to discover the past, present and future of sound.

Having sampled a diverse range of sounds throughout the series, Aubrey now studies a selection of them in even greater detail to identify what elements convey meaning.

Programme 7: Soundings from the Future

In recent years, man made sounds have considerably changed the sound of the earth. In this programme, Aubrey explores the effects of this "noise pollution", from traffic noise to underwater geological surveys, on animal communication and the future song of the earth.

Programme 8: Song of the Earth

In this final programme, Professor Aubrey Manning introduces a celebration of the song of the Earth, visiting some of the acoustic hotspots around the world and eavesdropping on some of the Earth’s most evocative sounds.
